Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) is planning to increase its raw lignite sales to more than 10 lakh tonnes, which is almost double compared to last year. It will earn Rs 200 crore under this head alone.

B Surender Mohan, chairman and managing director, said the additional quantity would fulfill the requirements of the consumers to a certain extent.

Mohan, who was speaking at the Regional Coal Consumers Council (RCCC) meet in Neyveli, said the company was planning to set up an open cast lignite mine at Devankudi, a village near its second mine.

The lignite excavated from the new mine (20 lakh tonne) will be supplied to its consumers.

After utilisation of lignite for its power plants, NLC has been e-auctioning lignite to various industries such as cement, chemical, brick, paper, steel and sugar. Moreover, NLC has been selling around 19 lakh tonne of lignite to an independent power plant at Neyveli annually.

During discussions at the RCCC meet, the members and consumer representatives asked more lignite so that they can go for expansions. The representatives from the cement industry said they needed at least 1.3 lakh tonne of lignite per month, and expressed interest to enter into a fuel-supply agreement with the company.

Ministry of Coal has constituted the RCCC to streamline the grievance redressal mechanism and to provide solution to complaints and to monitor proper supply of coal/lignite to its consumers.
