Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa announced setting up of 360 new Amma Canteens ( the low-cost food outlets set up by state government) across the state. With the proposed addition, the total number of Amma canteens will be 654.
The proposed outlets would come up in Chennai, government hospitals located in district headquarters (barring Madurai, Vellore, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin) and other places. Currently, there are 294 such canteens in the state, with the bulk of them, 203, in Chennai.
In a statement, Jayalalithaa said, with the expansion of Amma Canteens, several lakhs of poor people would be benefited.
These canteens sell food at subsidised rates, ranging from Re 1 to Rs 5. Meanwhile, an official team from Egypt on Saturday visited these canteens in Chennai to learn about the scheme and its operations.
