DMK calls for Tamil Nadu bandh on Tuesday

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has called for a bandh in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, to put pressure the Centre and the state government to address the issue of farmers reeling under acute drought.

DMK working president M K Stalin has appealed to labourers, youngsters, students, traders, members of organisations, and all political parties to extend support to the bandh.

The Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi have pledged support.

Pattali Makkal Katchi chose to stay away, saying the DMK was as responsible for the woes of farmers as the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Among the demands are waiver of all farm loans, constitution of a Kaveri management board and a Kaveri regulation committee, steps to protect the families of farmers who ended their lives and providing Rs 5,000 compensation per month to farm labourers.
