Prime Minister Narendra Modi today instructed immediate release of Rs 939.63 crore worth financial assistance to Tamil Nadu to help the state deal with situation arising out floods.
Development comes in response to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's letter stating the state direly needs around Rs 8,491 crore towards flood relief measures apart from Rs 2,000 crore urgent funds.
PIB release said funds were sanctioned after the state government requested for them.

Meanwhile, a Central team is being dispatched to the state to assess damages caused by floods. Further action will be taken after the team submits its report.
Earlier, a delegation led by S T K Jakkayan, special representative of Tamil Nadu, had submitted a detailed memorandum on flood damages to the PMO.
In the memorandum, the Tamil Nadu government had sought urgent financial assistance from the Centre and had asked for a Central team for an on-the-spot assessment of damages caused by floods and heavy rains.
