Decline in exports of iron ore has pulled down the custom duty collection in the state as the indirect tax mop-up has dipped by a whopping 41.31 per cent during the April- December period of the current fiscal.

The customs duty collection upto December, 2014 was Rs 1,353.76 crore against Rs 2,306.81 crore collected in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

The main reason for negative growth in customs duty collection is because of less export of iron ore from the ports in Odisha due to closure of mines.

The shortfall on account of export is to the tune of Rs 700 crore upto December. The reduction in rate of duty on coal is also another factor for the drop, S K Panda, chief commissioner, central excise, customs and service tax, Bhubaneswar zone told media persons.

The total revenue collection of indirect tax (central excise, customs and service tax) in the Bhubaneswar zone stood at Rs 5,900.98 crore, a measly 4.67 per cent increase against Rs 5,637.33 crore clocked during April-December period of 2013-14.

In the current fiscal, the total revenue realisation upto December is 58.08 per cent of the target of Rs 10,160 crore fixed for the current financial year under all the three heads.

The central excise collection till December is Rs 3,196.97 crore against Rs 2,110 crore mop-up during the same period in the last fiscal, up by 51.52 per cent. The target of central excise collection was Rs 4,160 crore for 2014-15.

In the service tax bracket, the collection was Rs 1,350.25 crore in the first nine months of the current financial year as against Rs 1,220.52 crore collection during the same period of 2013-14. "Against our expectations of 15 per cent growth in service tax, there is 11 per cent growth due to slump in mining activities," the chief commissioner said. With the expectation of operation of 3 to 4 ports in the state, a separate custom commissionerate has been set up, Panda added.

Besides an audit commissionerate at Bhubaneswar and one commissionerate at Rourkela are in the offing.

An official release said that anti- evasion detection on 28 cases amounting to Rs 368.17 crore have been made during the period upto December , 2014 whereas in 36 cases an amount of Rs 14.66 crores have been realised during the same period. In the scrutiny of returns in 60 cases (both in central excise and service tax), Rs 64.96 crore have been realised upto December end. Similarly, audit detection of Rs 154.80 crore have been made till December where in amount of Rs 14.45 crore is realised during the same period, the release added.
