This was the first time that all UPA allies met after pullout of TMC from UPA govt

The UPA Coordination Committee chaired by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, received a firm backing from its allies on the economic reforms undertaken by the government. This significantly, was the first time that the committee of all UPA allies met after the pullout of the Trinamool Congress from the UPA coalition last week; over differences with the UPA over its economic decisions.

Finance minister P Chidambaram speaking to reporters after the meeting said, “The UPA Coordination Committee agrees that economic reforms were necessary and unavoidable.” He added that, “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh underlined the need for a number of measures to ensure investments continue to flow.”

Interestingly when asked if the current political turmoil in Maharashtra, with the resignation of NCP's deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar was discussed at the meeting, Chidambaram declined that it was taken up.

All UPA allies including the NCP,DMK, National Conference, RLD were represented at the meeting.

The UPA coordination committee, coming close on the heels of the Congress Working Committee meeting, was intended to send out a strong message that the existing UPA allies are firmly with the government.

The BJP at its ongoing national executive in the capital, has been hitting out at the UPA stating that its allies were not even on board to back its reform measures; is they who were destabilizing the UPA and not the Opposition.
