Parle Products, India's leading biscuit maker, took Street by surprise on Wednesday after it said the company might lay off up to 10,000 workers as slowing economic growth and falling demand in the rural areas could lead to production cuts.

The comments come at a time when the Indian economy is grappling with a consumption slowdown. A slump has hit sales, forcing companies to curtail production amid hopes that the government will give an economic stimulus to revive growth.
