Farmers in Uttar Pradesh feel the pinch as potato prices touch record highs

With potato rates touching a new high every day, farmers in Uttar Pradesh are finding it difficult to acquire seeds. In the crop season, farmers are forced to buy potato seeds at three times the rates compared to previous years.

Potato seed is selling for Rs 60-70 per kg in the open market this year as compared to Rs 18-22 earlier. Crop area of potato is set to reduce this year due to high rates of seeds. 

However, the state government has arranged potato seeds for Rs 32 per kg at select centres but this is not enough to meet the demand.
