Markets stuck in a narrow range, mid-caps crack

The BSE mid-cap index has plunged 1.2% or 77 points at 6,532

Markets are stuck in a narrow range in the noon deals on the back of heavy selling pressure visible in the mid-cap and small-cap stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex is down 15 points at 19,301 and the 50-share Nifty has slipped 7 points at 5,843 levels. In the intra-day deals so far the Sensex has traded in a range of 100 points and the Nifty has moved in a range of 40 points.

The broader markets are underperforming the benchmark indices. The BSE mid-cap index has plunged 1.2% or 77 points at 6,532 and the small-cap index is down 1% at 6,500. Core Education from the mid-cap space has slipped close to 65% in intra-day deals to Rs 115.

Meanwhile, on the sectoral front the BSE realty index is the top loser, down 2.4% at 6,063. Consumer durables, metal, oil & gas, capital goods, PSU and bankex indices are also down 0.5-1% each. While, the IT stocks are witnessing some buying and the BSE IT index is the top gainer, up 1.5% at 6,702 and the teck index has gained 3,857.

From the heavyweights pack, ONGC is the top loser among the Sensex stocks, down 2.2% at Rs 317. Coal India, Cipla, Sterlite Industries, Larsen & Toubro, Jindal Steel and Reliance Industries have also slipped 1-2% each. On the other hand, Infosys has advanced 2.4% at Rs 2,904 after IT bellwether unveiled a central processing centre at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh to enable the income tax department to efficiently administer tax deduction at source (TDS).

Tata Motors, TCS, Wipro, HDFC, SBI, Maruti Suzuki and Sun Pharma are also among the notable gainer.

Among the individual stocks, Orient Green Power Company has rallied almost 10% to Rs 14.35 after Shriram Group, the promoter group has announced an open offer to buy 26% stake in the company at a price of Rs 15 per share.

The overall breadth is negative as 1,608 stocks are declining while 872 are advancing.
