April 25 earthquake: Five people killed in India

At least five people have been killed in various parts of the country as Nepal and North India were struck by a massive earthquake on Saturday.

Two people have died in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, due to a wall collapse, while another person was killed in the Bettiah district of Bihar.

The District Magistrate of Dabhanga, Bihar confirmed that at least two people were killed in wake of the quake, with a further ten injured.

Meanwhile, scores of people were killed in Nepal as building and homes collapsed that country due to the earthquakes.

According to reports, the epicentre of the tremors was said to be in Pokhra, Nepal, with the European Mediterranean Seismological Center stating that the earthquake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale.

 

India has placed its disaster response agencies on high alert, with the Indian Army, Air Force and Border Roads Organisation also on standby.
