Kindergarten teacher suddenly loses ability to read

A kindergarten teacher suddenly lost her ability to read while in the classroom and couldn't make sense of her lesson plan and her attendance sheet.

The 40-year-old was diagnosed with alexia without agraphia, also known as "word blindness", in which a patient loses the ability to read, but can still write and understand the spoken word.

The condition was caused due to a stroke that probably was caused by an unusual type of blood vessel inflammation within the brain.

The teacher has now come up with a new way to learn to read where she looks at the first letter beginning with the letter A, and traces each letter of the alphabet over the unknown letter until she gets a match.

The unusual case study was published in the journal of Neurology.
