Lupita Nyong'o grew up believing 'darker skin was not beautiful' stereotype

Lupita Nyong'o, who features on the cover of a fashion magazine for December issue, has said that she was grew up hearing that darker skin is not beautiful.

The Academy Award winning actress told in an interview with Glamour's Magazine that that European standards of beauty were something that plague the entire world, the idea that darker skin was not beautiful, that light skin was the key to success and love and Africa was no exception, the New York Post reported.

The 31-year-old actress said that she got a hint from the entertainment industry that dark skin was unacceptable.

The '12 Years a Slave' star was named People magazine's Most Beautiful person in April, 2014.
