Grandnephew of freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose, Surya Bose, said on Monday that the previous UPA Government had refused to declassify documents on Bose, citing law and order problem and issues with 'friendly nations'.
"In the previous government, the prime minister's office, as well as the home ministry had made a statement which was quite volatile saying that these classified files in the prime minister's office cannot be declassified and if they do they would have law and order problem and problems with friendly nations," said Bose in an exclusive interview with ANI.
On being asked if he wished to do anything about the issue, Bose said, "It is not just wishing something for, we've been, for quite some years now there is movement going on in India which has been tough. Quite a bit of momentum is the declassification, after the RTI row was introduced."
Surya Bose's younger brother Chandra had earlier said that the former has received an invitation to attend a reception in Berlin, during which he will meet the Prime Minister.
Chandra had further demanded that the government declassify all the documents related to Netaji and the Indian National Army.
Earlier, two recently declassified IB files had revealed that the former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru-led government had order a surveillance on the Netaji's kin between 1948 and 1968. The files reveal that the IB had resumed British-era surveillance on the two Bose family homes in Calcutta at Woodburn Park and Elgin Road.
