Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ram Madhav on Tuesday termed Congress leader Yousuf Bhat's sexist remark as 'extremely unfortunate' and said that people with such a mentality should be thrown out of Jammu and Kashmir.

Madhav termed Bhat's remark as shameful and said that the Election Commission should look into the matter.

"This is very unfortunate, in our country our girls are our pride and honour, not liability. We need to finish this kind of mentality. The EC will decide as to what action they need to take, but the people should throw people with such mentality out of Jammu and Kashmir as it is a curse for women," he said.

Meanwhile, lawyer and activist Sudha Ramalingam said that such statement shows Bhat's narrow-mindedness and patriarchal ideology.

"It's really shocking to see a politician who should be a statesman, who should also have knowledge about our Constitution which gives equality to women, and it cannot look at women as a liability at all. It shows his narrow mindedness and his patriarchal ideologies," said Ramalingam in Chennai.

Bhat, who is the Congress candidate from Ganderbal in Jammu and Kashmir, had while filing his election affidavit mentioned his daughters' to be liabilities. His remark led to an angry outburst in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere.

Bhat was later quoted as saying, "Unmarried daughters are a liability to their fathers.
