Uber rape: Delhi Police Commissioner hails verdict

Expressing satisfaction over life imprisonment to Uber rape convict Shiv Kumar Yadav, Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi on Tuesday said the verdict had provided justice to the victim.

"The verdict will also be a lesson to the people having such mindsets that if they indulge in such an act the law will not forgive them, said the police chief.

He further said that the verdict was a profound step in the direction of women's safety and security.

Shiv Kumar Yadav, 32, was given the life imprisonment till death by Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja, who held that the convict while raping the victim abducted her with an intent to compel her for marriage.

 

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 21,000 on him.

The court also directed the Delhi Legal Services Authority to give compensation to the victim and to take care of the family of the convict.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the night of December 5 last year when the victim, a finance executive working in Gurgaon, was on her way back home at Inderlok in Central Delhi.

The accused was arrested on December 7, 2014 from Mathura.
