Peru captain Carlos Lobaton has warned Brazil that history will count for nothing when the teams meet in their opening Copa America Group C match on Sunday.

Peru have not beaten the South American giants since 1985 and their last Copa America victory over the Selecao was a decade before that.

"Records exist to be broken," Lobaton told reporters on Saturday. "We are all anxious and looking forward to coming up against them," Xinhua news agency reported.

Brazil are aiming for their ninth Copa America triumph while Peru are vying to win the tournament for a third time.

Peru coach Ricardo Gareca said he had not mentioned Brazil's head-to-head dominance to his players ahead of the match in the southern Chilean city of Temuco.

"History doesn't worry us. We want to start (the tournament) well. I want the team to improve with every match," the Argentine said.

Peru warmed up for the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Mexico in Lima last week. Brazil prepared with a 2-0 victory over Mexico followed by a 1-0 defeat of Honduras.
