The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is targeting to enroll 15 million active members in Uttar Pradesh under the ongoing membership drive.
The intensive membership drive, including the digital membership campaign, had started on November 1 and would continue through March 31, 2015. The digital membership drive in the state was launched on Thursday by newly appointed UP BJP in-charge Om Mathur, a Rajya Sabha MP, here.
Earlier this month, BJP’s pan-India digital membership had begun with Prime Minister Narendra Modi becoming the first member through digital medium, followed by party president Amit Shah.

The party would be organising training programme for its cadres and office-bearers to conduct digital memberships, which allows a person to become a BJP member through mobile phone.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, BJP had secured 71 of the 80 seats in UP, including Varanasi, from where Narendra Modi had contested. Two seats were won by National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner Apna Dal. Thus, NDA secured 73 of 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state on the back of ‘Modi Wave’.
The win has enthused BJP, which had been trailing Samajwadi Party and Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) at the third spot in UP. The assembly poll exploits in Maharashtra and Haryana have further energised BJP to prepare for the 2017 assembly polls in the state and regain power.
