Delhi will go to polls on February 7, the Election Commission announced today. The capital has been under the President's rule for about a year. The counting of votes will be on February 10.

The Election Commission said the last date of filing nominations is January 21.

Major political parties in Delhi have already started preparing for the assembly polls with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing a massive rally this Saturday.

The elections come after almost a full year since the Aam Aadmi Party gave up its position as the ruling party in government. It had taken office based on outside support from the Congress party.

Then Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal resigned his position February 14, 2014, a mere 49 days after taking the oath of office, claiming that he was being prevented from tabling the Jan Lokpal Bill in the House by both the Congres Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

On February 17, President Pranab Mukherjee accepted the resignations of Kejriwal and his ministers, and imposed President's Rule in the state. The Assembly was subsequently placed in suspended animation, and was finally dissolved in November last year
