12 candidates file nomination for 10 Maha Council seats

Twelve candidates, six them from BJP, have filed nomination papers for elections to 10 Legislative Council seats in Maharashtra scheduled for June 10.

Today was the last day of filing nomination papers.

Six of the candidates - Surjit Singh Thakur, Pravin Darekar, Prasad Lad, R N Singh, Sadabhau Khot and Vinayak Mete - have been fielded by the BJP.

Manoj Kotak, also of BJP, is in the fray as an Independent.

Congress has fielded senior leader and former chief minister Narayan Rane, who filed his papers today, while Leader of Opposition in the Council Dhananjay Munde and Council Chairman Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar have entered the fray as NCP candidates.
 

BJP's ally Shiv Sena has fielded two nominees - Diwakar Raote and Subhash Desai.

The last day for withdrawal of nomination papers is June 3.

The 10 members to the Upper House will be elected by MLAs. In the 288-member Assembly, BJP has 122 MLAs followed by Shiv Sena (63), Congress (41) and NCP (40).
