BJP today accused Congress of speaking in many voices over the JNU row as it rejected its virtual disapproval of Shashi Tharoor's comparison of Kanhaiya Kumar with Bhagat Singh, saying its leaders seek "cheap popularity by insulting our martyrs".
"Congress leaders are playing this double game on the signals of their president Sonia Sonia Gandhi. They have been insulting martyrs for cheap publicity. BJP rejects Congress' comments over Tharoor when he continues to defend himself," party National Secretary Shrikant Sharma said.
Attacking Tharoor, he said, "Bhagat Singh went to gallows hailing Mother India while we all know what Kanhaiya is accused of. You can praise anybody you wish but you should not insult martyrs," he said, noting that even High Court's conditional bail order for the JNUSU student spoke about "infection" of anti-nationalism.
