The Union government has released Rs 23.16 crore in the last three years for Asiatic lions in Gujarat under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme
Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitat (CSS-IDWH), Rajya Shabha MP Parimal Nathwani said Monday.
The money allotted under the same scheme in the last three years was Rs 75.86 crore for elephants and Rs 1010.69 crore for tigers, Nathwani said quoting a reply by Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Babul Supriyo.
"The Centre and Gujarat government have launched an Asiatic Lion Conservation Project with a budget of Rs 97.85 crore," he added.
In a statement, the RS MP said the information was received after he posed questions on the issue of lion conservation to Supriyo.
Supriyo has informed that the Gujarat government had brought an additional 236.73 kilometres of lion habitat, comprising Pania, Mitiyala and Girnar, under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, Nathwani said.
"The Gujarat government has allocated Rs 231 crore over a period of five years for lion conservation, with main focus on reducing man-animal conflict," he said.
