: The Greater Chennai Corporation has earmarked Rs 415 crore for the financial year 2016-17 for developing storm water drains.

Corporation Mayor 'Saidai' Duraisami, while presenting the annual budget for the civic body, said Rs 415 crore had been earmarked for developing and maintaining the storm water drains during the next financial year.

The allocation comes in the backdrop of the devastating deluge in the city last December following heavy rains.

Chennai and its neighbouring districts were largely affected due to the heavy rainfall in which several low lying areas were left inundated while the State government said 470 people lost their lives due to rain related incidents.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had laid the foundation stone for Rs 1,093.64 crore integrated rainwater drainage project under the Corporation last month.
