A Chinese social media star, famous for live streaming himself giving away money to people in remote villages, has been caught on camera faking his generous acts and taking the money back immediately after donating it to villagers.

Brother Jie's deceit was uncovered when a video showing him and his assistant taking back the money from villagers in poor Liangshan area in China's Sichuan province went viral.

Jie whose blog has over 6.6 lakh followers has apologised to his fans and asked for forgiveness, but the public have remained sceptical about him, the BBC reported.

He was roundly condemned on the social media for his fake act to claim fame.

Facing strong condemnation, Jie live streamed himself apparently attempting to take his life, the report said.

Local police stopped his live streaming and have started investigation, the report said.
