At least five CPI(M) workers were assaulted and three houses, including one of a former state minister, were damaged this evening by alleged Trinamool Congress supporters in the Boro-Jagulia area of Haringhata in Nadia district.

CPI(M) district secretary Sumit Dey, who rushed to the spot, alleged that armed Trinamool Congress goons attacked the house of former minister Bankim Ghosh and two other neighbouring houses.

"Apart from Ghosh's house, another house belonging to our party supporter Nihar Nath, was also attacked. The goons assaulted Ghosh's sister in-law and Nath's wife. Three others were also injured in the attack and have been admitted to JLN Hospital in Kalyani," Dey said.

A large contingent of police and central paramilitary force have also reached the area. Senior police officers said investigations were on into the incident.

Haringhata Municipality chairman and Trinamool Congress leader Rajib Dalal termed the incident as CPI(M) infighting.

Assembly elections will be held in Nadia district on April 21. No one has been arrested so far, the police said.
