The death toll from super typhoon Rammasun, the strongest storm to hit southern China in over four decades rose to 46 with another 25 missing, authorities said today, as another typhoon approaches the country's eastern coastline.
Rammasun brought gales, downpours and floods to southern provinces, affecting nearly ten million people in the provinces of Guangdong, Hainan, Yunnan and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.
Nineteen deaths were reported in south China's Hainan, nine in southwest China's Guangxi and 18 in neighbouring Yunnan, the statement said.
Deaths from a mudslide in a Yunnan village early yesterday morning rose to 14, with 11 people still missing, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today.
Over 620,000 people have been resettled and some 252,000 are in urgent need of basic necessities. The rain has destroyed 37,000 houses and 250,000 hectares of crops, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, another typhoon Matmo will make a landfall in the eastern Chinese mainland tomorrow after sweeping across Taiwan, the National Meteorological Center forecast said.
Typhoon Matmo, the 10th typhoon to hit China this year, is moving northwest at a speed of 20 to 25 kilometres per hour and will strengthen to level 14 to 16 when it hits Taiwan with winds of up to 52 meters per second, NMC said.
The NMC also said that it will make a landfall again in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces tomorrow after passing Taiwan.
