Apprehending crop failure due to water scarcity, a debt-ridden cotton farmer allegedly committed suicide near here today, police said.
59-year-old Parige Devaiah, a resident of Chinna Bonala village under Sircilla police limits, nearly 45km from here, committed suicide by consuming insecticide, they said.
The farmer had raised cotton crop in his four acres land by availing a loan of Rs 1.50 lakh from private financiers.
Due to a drought-like situation prevailing in the district, he was worried about crop failure and repayment of the loan and hence took the extreme step, police added.
