A case under the new law which bans instant triple talaq was registered in Surat on Thursday against a Muslim man for allegedly divorcing his wife on phone.

This was first case under The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 filed in Gujarat after the law was passed by Parliament, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Panna Momaya.

As per the complainant woman, her husband Mohammad alias Vasim Pathan and his mother were ill-treating her for the last one and half years.

In June, following a quarrel, Pathan took her to her parents' house and left her there, she said.

On the same night he called her on phone and uttered talaq thrice, she alleged.

She filed the complaint on Thursday.

The triple talaq bill was passed by both houses of Parliament in the last week of July.

Under the new law, triple talaq can attract a prison sentence of upto three years.
