Earlier, Thikkavankipalem's fishermen community had staged a dharna demanding that NTPC authorities either provide them employment in the unit or else remove the pipeline releasing waste water into the sea.

The fishermen alleged that they had lost their livelihood due to NTPC Simhadri unit's poisonous waste water released into the sea, killing seafood like fish, prawns and others.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) had fired six rounds in the air to disperse agitators at the Simhadri unit of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Parawada mandal.

According to the police, when the CISF guarding the NTPC unit resorted to a cane charge, the fishermen community allegedly pelted stones, forcing them to open fire in the air. One fisherman and village revenue officer of nearby Muthyalammapalem was injured in the stone pelting, police said.

Visakhapatnam District Collector Lav Agarwal and Commissioner of Police J Purnachandra Rao reached the spot and pacified the agitators, after the situation turned violent.

The situation is fully under control as agitators left for their homes from the NTPC area. Nobody was injured in the firing, Commissioner of Police J Purnachandra Rao told PTI.
