The Gujarat High Court today held the state government-adopted formula on admission to engineering courses is "improper" and directed it to follow the earlier method.
Acting on a public interest litigation (PIL), a division bench of the high court, comprising Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala, gave this order.
The PIL alleged the present system adopted by Gujarat education department is disadvantageous to students of the Gujarat Board.
The court has ordered that the state should give admission to engineering courses as the per their earlier order given in July 2013.
The court's earlier order said the candidate should be given admission on 60:40 ratio.
"The merit list shall be prepared after adding 60 per cent weightage of percentile marks obtained in the theory subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) of the board exam of candidates with 40 per cent weightage of the percentile marks obtained in the Joint Entrance Exam (Main) 2014," the High Court said.
"Total marks obtained by a candidate will be 'A+B', where 'A' is held as the percentage of actual marks obtained by a candidate in his board exam, to be multiplied by a percentile given by that board, irrespective of the fact whether they have registered in the process of selection or not," the High Court said, while giving the formula for admission to engineering courses.
The High Court said "B is percentage of marks obtained in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) which is to be multiplied by the percentile in the JEE".
