In a major relief to cancer patients, the district headquarter hospital in Koraput got a two-bed day care chemotherapy centre.
At present, cancer patients requiring chemotherapy are forced to go to Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC) in Cuttack, around 500 km from here, for treatment in the want of a cancer hospital in the district.
"After getting the first round of chemotherapy at AHRCC, patients now don't require to go to the AHRCC any more. Once the composition of medicines required for chemotherapy is decided by the AHRCC, the same could be given at the day care chemotherapy centre here," Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Koraput, Laxmi Dhar Kabi, said.

Kabi said a doctor and a nurse from the district headquarters hospital have been trained in New Delhi to manage the day care chemotherapy centre, which will remain open from 9 AM to 5 PM.
"The patients will be admitted for treatment at the day care centre and will be discharged within two to three hours of treatment," Kabi said.
