A sculptor has begun work on a life-sized statue of late rocker Lemmy following a fundraising drive.

The Motorhead frontman was a regular at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in Los Angeles and owners of the venue celebrated his life by holding a memorial event in January, weeks after his death in December, reported Contactmusic.

Lemmy is set to be immortalised as a life-size bronze statue, in the patio area near the bar, by sculptor Travis Moore, who has waived his usual fee.

A crowdfunding page was created on Youcaring.Com to raise money for the materials and has since raised more than 13,800 pound.

Online pictures show Moore creating a clay miniature model which will form the basis of the life-sized statue. He aims to have the project finished by May this year.

Lemmy died days after his 70th birthday following a battle with an aggressive form of cancer.
