A local court today sentenced a 28-year old man from Navi Mumbai to five years of simple imprisonment for abetting his wife's suicide.

Thane Assistant Sessions Judge A S Jadhav convicted Mahesh Laxman Kedare, a resident of Ghansoli in the district, and awarded the sentence.

According to Prosecutor S H Kapre (Goswami), Kedare was addicted to drinking and used to torture his wife Manisha (25). They had a son and were even planning to divorce.

However, in December 2011, the woman set herself ablaze and she died.

The accused was tried under IPC sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 306 (abetment of suicide), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

"In the present case, the prosecution has proved that as a result of unbearable matrimonial cruelty at the hands of accused, his wife committed suicide within a period of three years of marriage," the court observed.

According to the prosecution, the couple's minor son is in the custody of the deceased woman's mother.
