Meghalaya mountaineer climbs Everest

Press Trust of India Shillong

Lamare climbed the 8848m peak in the early hours yesterday along with members of the Indian Army adventure wing, officials said here.

He is credited with being the first civilian from India to scale the Cho Oyu peak in China, the sixth highest peak in the world at 8201m in May 2006.

Earlier, he had accompanied the Army Adventure Wing as high altitude cameraman on an assault on Mt Kanchenjunga, in 2004, which, however, had to be abandoned due to bad weather.
