Press Trust of India Madurai
: Farmers associations of five districts would meet here on July 28 to thank Chief Minister Minister Jayalalithaa for her 'success' in getting the height of Mullaiperiyar dam increased to 142 feet.

Association members said the districts are Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga.

State Ministers Sellur K Raju and R P Udhayakumar participated in a preparatory meeting attended by farmers association representatives to discuss arrangements for the function.

Sellur Raju, who addressed the meeting, said the successful work of increasing the dam level to 142 feet would immensely help farmers and be a boon for them.

The Supreme Court had on May 7 held that the 120-year-old dam is safe and allowed Tamil Nadu government to raise the water level to 142 feet and ultimately to 152 feet after completion of strengthening measures on the dam.

It had struck down a law promulgated by Kerala government declaring the dam as endangered and fixing the water level at 136 feet.

The dam is situated in Idukki district of Kerala and is owned and operated by the Tamil Nadu government.
