Cyberabad Police have arrested a Nigerian national from Mumbai for allegedly cheating a city resident to the tune of Rs 11 lakh.

The Cyber Crime Police of Cyberabad arrested Israel Chimezie alias Toney Maxwell from a flat in Mumbai, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crimes) Janaki Sharmila said today.

On April 11, one S Vinod Kumar, a resident of Nacharam here, approached Cyber Crime Police stating that in January this year an unknown phone caller from Ghana told him that his company required some specific liquid substance that is used in the production of animal vaccines.

He said the material was available only with Raj Trading Company in Mumbai and furnished the contact number of one Kushi Raj, said to be its MD. The complainant then purchased one litre of this liquid paying Rs 10 lakh.

After this, the accused sent one representative, Francis Adams, who met the complainant for inspection and approval of material purchased by him. Later he informed that their company required 10 liters of the liquid and asked him to supply it immediately, police said.

However, as the deal required around one crore rupees, Kumar decided to drop from this business and asked Kushi Raj of Raj Trading Company for refund of his money.

In turn, she replied that they will refund the money after deducting 15 per cent towards damages and asked the complainant to deposit the same, police said.

The complainant paid another Rs 1.4 lakh to them as directed by Kushi Raj. Even though they did not refund his money, she asked to pay another 10 per cent more towards the damages.

The complainant realised that he had been cheated by them and immediately approached the Cyber Crime Police, the police officer said.

"After investigating all angles of the case, the Cyber Crime Police apprehended the accused Toney Maxwell and efforts are on to nab the prime accused Ikechukwuma Johnson, who is absconding," a release from Cyberabad Police Commissionerate said.
