The Thane Police has apprehended nine minor boys, in the age group of 10 to 15 years, for allegedly stealing motorcycles in the district's Mumbra township, an official said.

Acting on several complaints of theft of two-wheelers in Mumbra, the police formed a special squad which carried out searchers in the area and caught nine children for allegedly indulging in the crime, Deputy Commissioner of Police zone-1 Dr D S Swami told reporters last evening.

The police recovered 27 two-wheelers of various prominent brands from them, he said.

Out of the nine minors nabbed by the police, seven had never been to school, he said.

The boys made use of duplicate keys to steal the bikes and would then have joy rides. After exhausting the vehicle's fuel, they would abandon it or hide it at an isolated place, the official said.

The nine were produced today before a court for juveniles which sent them to a remand home.
