Odisha sizzles as mercury touches 44.2 deg C at Balangir

Heatwave-like situation intensified in many parts of Odisha today with the mercury soaring up to 44.2 degrees Celsius at Balangir making it the hottest place in the state.

The entire western region of Odisha sizzled under intense heat, as the weather department said heatwave conditions were likely to prevail in some parts of interior Odisha during the next 48 hours.

At least a dozen places in the state recorded temperature above 40 degrees Celsius. Sonepur recorded 43.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Hirakud (42.9) and Bhawanipatna (42.5).

While both Sundargarh and Sambalpur recorded 42 degrees Celsius, it was followed by Jharsuguda (41.8), Angul (41.1), Talcher and Keonjhargarh (both 41) and Malkangiri and Phulbani (both 40.2), the weather office said.
 

Bhubaneswar recorded 35.3 degrees Celsius, while Cuttack registered 35.8 degree Celsius.
