Peacocks, peafowls rescued

Twelve peacocks and peafowls were rescued from a house in the northern part of Kolkata and three persons arrested in this connection, police said.

The birds were rescued from 45 Haritaki Bagan Lane in the Burtolla police station area and three persons named Teherir Khan (40) of Thane, Maharashtra, Sougata Ghosh (23) and Soumen Balier were arrested late last evening, they said.

The trio was booked under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and were sent to police custody till Wednesday after they were produced at a city court today.

An initial probe revealed that the accused supplied the birds as well as animals throughout the country and to Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.
