Police today arrested three persons with Rs 54 lakhs in new Rs 2,000 notes when they were entering Gujarat through Amirgadh checkpost, a senior official said.

"Police intercepted a car which came from Rajasthan and upon checking found out 2700 bundles of new Rs 2000 denomination notes. The total value comes to Rs 54 lakh," Banaskantha SP Neeraj Badgujar said.

"We have arrested three persons and also informed the Income Tax department about them. In the primary investigation those arrested told us that they belong to Hathras in UP. They were travelling from UP to Ahmedabad," he said.

Those arrested have been identified as Nitin Agarwal, Sachin Agarwal and their driver Manish Kumar, said the official.

A probe is on to find out from where they procured such a high number of new currency notes, he said.

"They told us that they were on their way to visit a food processing expo being held in Ahmedabad," he said.
