Police commando killed, 5 hurt in Naxal firing in Gadchiroli

A police commando was killed and five were wounded today when Naxals fired at them in adjoining Gadchiroli district in eastern Maharasthra, police said.

The incident came a day after a high voter turnout (about 65%) was recorded in the Lok Sabha election in Gadchiroli, the worst Naxal-hit district in the state.

The attack took place between Asagaon and Tondelfata villages under Sironcha taluka when a police team consisting of C-60 commando force personnel came under indiscriminate fire from a group of Naxals, they said.

The deceased was identified as Giridhar Nago Atram. The district administration immediately handed over a compensation cheque of Rs 20 lakh to the family of Atram.
 

The five injured personnel were airlifted to a Nagpur hospital for treatment.

Top officails, incluidng Anup Singh, IGP (Anti-Naxal Operations), Sanjay Saxena, Joint Comissioner of Police, and Ravindra Kadam, IG (Nagpur Range) visited the hosptial and enquired about the condition of the injured.

The injured were identified as Ramesh Pungati (30), Sandeep Kodape (24), Prakash Chikram, Amardeep Bhurshe, (both aged 32) and Murlidhar Veladi (33).
