Tamil Nadu has been adjudged the Best State in promoting empowerment of persons with disabilities by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
The award, part of the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities-2013, was announced today on the occasion of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, an official release said here.
Tamil Nadu is a pioneer state in taking various measures aimed at the welfare of disabled. It had granted monthly pension to all disabled persons and brought down the minimum age for disability pension from 45 to 18.

The state has made rules applicable to all multi-storied buildings for the benefit of disabled persons.
The national awards for persons with disabilities have been instituted to focus attention on difficulties faced by people with disabilities. Forty-three awards, in various categories, were announced, the release said.
