A dry patch of sweltering weather today gave way to relief in several parts of north India which were hit by a welcome spell of showers.
The skies opened up in Delhi today following a period of blistering heat which had seen day temperatures soaring close to the 40-degrees Celsius mark.
The national capital received 6.8mm rainfall till evening.
However, despite the rain, the maximum settled three notches above normal at 37.2 degrees, which was a notch below yesterday's 38.2 degrees.
The minimum was recorded at 28.4 degrees, two notches above normal and slightly higher than the 27.5 degrees yesterday. Humidity in air oscillated between 57 and 77 per cent.
The mercury also registered a slight drop at many places across Punjab and Haryana which, too, were hit by rain.
Their common capital and the Union Territory of Chandigarh recorded a high of 35.4 degrees while, in Haryana, Narnaul saw the mercury settle at 33 degrees, which was down two notches. The maximum in Ambala was at 35 degrees.
In Punjab, light rain occurred in Amritsar, which recorded a high of 31.6 degrees, while Ludhiana's maximum settled within the normal at 33.7 degrees.
The Monsoon also got active over the western region of Rajasthan, bringing respite from the heat-wave like conditions prevailing in the desert state.
Jodhpur recorded the maximum rainfall in the state of 7.6mm since morning.
Mercury dropped by one to three degrees at many places in the western districts of Rajasthan, including in Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Churu.
Maximum temperatures ranged between 33 and 39 degrees in different areas in these districts.
Moderate rainfall also occurred at most places in the northeast and southern regions of Rajasthan. The trend of moderate and scattered rainfall will continue in the state over the next 24 hours, the weatherman said.
