A 'suspension of work' notice was today put up at the gate of UIL Limited, a factory manufacturing steel wires at Kalyani in Nadia district, following which road blockades were put up on the Kalyani - Barrackpore Expressway by affected workers.

250 workers, including 150 permanent employees, were on the payroll.

After finding the notice put up on the main gate of the factory this morning when the workers reported for work, they squatted on the Expressway since 8.30 am.

The blockade was lifted after two hours following an assurance by the police that they would take an initiative to talk with the management.

When contacted, factory GM Mahesh Bajari, who had signed the suspension of work notice, said that the company was incurring heavy loss and was running in that condition for the last seven years.

Besides the economic condition, there were wrongdoings on the part of the employees which include acts of indiscipline, open defiance of authority, Bajari said.

Workers Union representative Surat Ali Biswas said although the management had called a meeting with the union three days ago, they had not given an inkling about the suspension of work notice.

The management, he alleged, had taken away all the finished goods from the factory premises in the last couple of days.
