The superintendent and four other staff of the district jail here were suspended after preliminary inquiries found "lapses" on their part in the recent clash inside the prison in which two inmates died.
The suspension orders of jail superintendent Obaleshappa, chief warder B M Navi and three other warders S S Talwar, J B Mulky Patil and A Kolara were issued by the Prisons department yesterday, officials said.
Pending inquiry, they had been suspended for dereliction of duty.

Two inmates of the prison, Madoor Isubu and his associate Ganesh Shetty, were killed by their rival gang inside the prison on November 2, an incident which was described by the police as pre-planned.
Police had registered a case against five inmates in connection with the incident. A few of the inmates had complained to investigating officers that the prison staff also had involvement in the incident.
Meanwhile, Hassan district prison superintendent V Krishnamurthy has been appointed as the new jail superintendent. Raghupati, also from Hassan prison, will be the new jailor, a post which was vacant till now, the sources said.
