Van with radioactive substance crashes in Bosnia, no leak

AP Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
Authorities in Bosnia say a van transporting radioactive material has been involved in a crash, but there is no danger of radiation leakage as the substance remained sealed in its container.

The van overturned on a motorway near the northeastern town of Maglaj today after colliding with a passenger car.

The road was immediately sealed off and nuclear safety inspectors were called to the site.

After inspection, they issued a statement saying the radioactive isotope Iridium-192 remained sealed in its container and no increased radiation was detected.

The container was safely removed from the site and collected by the owner.

The van and its contents belong to a Bosnian company manufacturing steel structures and repairing industrial plants, authorised to use radioactive sources in their industrial radiography work.
