The US-based Mentor Graphics Corporation (MGC), world leader in electronic hardware and software design solutions, has established a state-of-the art R&D centre here to cater to its overseas market.

According to MGC's chief operating officer, Greg Hinckley, the facility has been set up mainly to make use of the high quality of engineering talent available in India.

Greg indicated that the staff would soon be expanded to make the unit a major engineering facility that will develop key technology and products.

Director of infrastructure, Mark Klein, said MGC has R&D centres in four countries and the one at Hyderabad will be at par with any of the others.

Susheel Chandra, CEO of MGC's Hyderabad operations, said the centre will involve itself only in R&Dactivities.

He said MGP had major electronic clients like Motorola and Texas Instruments whose needs will be met from the Hyderabad centre.

Chandra said there was only a limited domestic market for electronic design automation (EDA) in which the centre specialised. However, as more multinationals in the electronics and semiconductors area opened operations in India, the centre could look to a sizeable domestic business. He put the current year's exports from the Indian centre at around Rs 3.5 crore.
