Panel Report On Genetic Screening Open For Debate

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has released new guidelines for the use of genetic screening in employment. This means that jobs can be refused if screening of applicants reveals genetic defects for disorders that will make the person unfit for the particular job for which he or she has applied. The tests are carried out with a sample of blood. The guidelines were drafted by a panel headed by former Chief Justice M N Venkatachalaiah. They update the ICMR guidelines of 1980, and include fresh regulations for research in newer areas like human genetics, organ transplantation and assisted reproduction. ICMR says the panels report is open for a national debate before it is cast into the final form.
