Railways Freight Revenue Up 21.4 %

The railways freight revenue for the period April-November 1997 stood at Rs 21,941 crore on 276.69 million tonnes, an increase of 21.4 per cent over the previous year.
The bulk of the revenue came from transportation of coal which yielded Rs 6,202 crore followed by Rs 1,614 crore from petroleum products.
The railways earned Rs 599 crore from movement of raw material for steel plants and Rs 805.6 crore on finished goods from steel plants.

Transportation of iron ore for exports fetched Rs 279 crore, cement Rs 1,062 crore, foodgrains Rs 846 crore and fertilisers Rs 575 crore.
Movement of other goods accounted for Rs 958 crore, while container traffic brought in another Rs 198 crore. The average earning per million tonnes was Rs 46.77 crore. Iron and steel provided the highest rate of earnings at 106.85 crore per million tonnes.
In terms of earnings per net tonne km, which is the payload of one tonne carried over a distance of one kilometre, the earning was 69.72 paisa an increase of 10.56 paisa over last year resulting from the twin freight hikes imposed by the railways this year.
