The Germany National Team plays South Korea at Kazan Arena on Wednesday for the last match in Group F. It is a must-win for Germany to qualify for the next round. The complexion of the group wil change if Sweden beat Mexico and then much will depend on goal difference for Germany to qualify. This is quite unexpected from the defending champions who were considered initially as favourites to lift the Fifa World Cup 2018.

Germany has dominated possession but has been wasteful in their final ball so far. They are yet to find the perfect partner to work with Toni Kroos in the midfield area.

In the first match, when Germany played Mexico, they used their regular triangular trio of Toni Kroos, Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira. Ozil was deployed as an attacking option and Kroos and Khedira played the defensive and holding midfield role. However, this legendary trio who helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup was not effective. In the defensive front, Germany were facing Mexican counters and were finding it hard to find the final ball. Although Germany took a lot of shots, it was not the usual German attack.

In the 2nd match when Germany played Sweden, they made changes in the midfield. Ozil and Khedira were both dropped. Sebastian Rudy and Marco Reus were brought instead of them. Reus played more of an attacking midfield role and Rudy got injured in the first half. Gundogan was brought in his place and played more of a holding role. Germany failed to create chances for the strikers to score and had to depend for Toni Kroos to score a sublime freekick at the end.

What Germany can do

Germany can deploy more of an attacking approach by using a combination of Kroos, Ozil, Gundogan and Reus, where Reus can be deployed on the left wing with Ozil as an attacking midfield. Since left winger and central attacking midfield keep on changing the position, Ozil would come handy to provide the dead ball for Reus, Werner or Muller.

Another option would be using Draxler on the central attacking midfield because he has relatively been quiet on the left wing and would be more of an attacking threat being deployed in the centre. They can deploy Julian Brandt in the 2nd half who can run down the defenders.

Thus, for attacking options they can choose between Ozil and Draxler. For holding role, the Germans can opt for Khedira or Gundogan along with Kroos.
