An Istanbul court today ordered the release of seven suspects in the controversial trial of staff from the Cumhuriyet opposition newspaper but said other prominent defendants should be kept in jail.
	The seven, including cartoonist Musa Kart, will be released under judicial supervision, meaning they have to report to the authorities regularly ahead of the next hearing on September 11.
	However the judge ordered that four other suspects -- including the prominent commentator Kadri Gursel and investigative journalist Ahmet Sik -- should remain in custody.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Ireland would not accept an economic border with Northern Ireland after Brexit and urged Britain to come up with alternatives in an unusually blunt statement.

Irish PM rules out economic border after Brexit

The Spanish government has filed an appeal with the country's constitutional court against a reform passed by the Catalan parliament to fast-track bills through the regional parliament, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said today.
	Catalonia's majority separatist lawmakers hope the reform they approved on Wednesday will pave the way for an independence referendum in the wealthy northeastern region called for October 1 which Madrid deems illegal.
	"By presenting this appeal the government is fulfilling its duty to make sure the law is upheld," Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told a news conference.
	"Catalan society needs to be protected from a radical and divisive project which is being imposed on them by force," he added.
	"There will not be any referendum on October 1...This is not constitutional and it is not legal."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told US counterpart Rex Tillerson today that Moscow remained ready to work with Washington despite striking back at new sanctions being readied approved by Congress.
	"Lavrov confirmed that our country is still ready to normalise bilateral relations with the US and to cooperate on the most important international issues," Russia's foreign ministry said after a phone call between the two top diplomats.
	"However this is possible only on the basis of equality, mutual respect and a balancing interests," the ministry said.

A man killed one person and wounded four others in a knife attack at a supermarket in the German city of Hamburg today before being detained by police.
	"There is no valid information yet on the motive" of the man, who "entered a supermarket and suddenly began attacking customers", said police.
	German daily Bild published a picture of the attacker in the back of a police car with a white, blood-soaked bag over his head, and reported that he cried "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) in the supermarket.
	This account was not immediately confirmed by police.
	The suspect, who has not yet been identified, fled the supermarket after the attack.

Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian teenager and wounded seven others today during clashes near the border fence in Gaza, said the health ministry of the Hamas movement that rules the enclave.
	Abdulrahman Abu Hmeisa, 16, was killed in the clashes east of the Al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.
	He said seven others were also wounded by Israeli gun fire by the border fence.
	The clashes erupted after hundreds of youths reached the border area in response to a call by Hamas for protests to take place in solidarity with Palestinians in Jerusalem.

At least one person was killed and four wounded today during a prison break in Bukavu, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the city's mayor said.
	It was just the latest in a series of violent incidents at prisons in the troubled country.
	Philemon Yogolelo told reporters that so far there had been one confirmed death, four seriously wounded and that about 20 prisoners had escaped. He was speaking after visiting the prison an hour after the incident.
	Two Burundian soldiers in detention had thrown a grenade that had destroyed an entrance to the prison, permitting the break-out, said army spokesman Captain Dieudonne Kasereka.
	Gunfire could be heard near the prison at around 1:30 pm local time (1130 GMT) and there was panic in the streets of Bukavu, said an AFP correspondent.
	Bukavu is the regional capital of South Kivu province and lies on the border with Rwanda.
	The incident is just the latest in a series of outbreaks of violence at prisons in the country.

Britain will try to keep as many aspects of its EU membership in place as possible during a transition period of up to three years after Brexit, finance minister Philip Hammond said today.
	But Hammond told BBC radio that EU nationals would have to register with the authorities starting from the expected departure date of March 2019 as the government comes up with a new immigration system.
	"Many things will look similar" and goods will continue to flow between Britain and the EU in "much the same way as they do now" even after the scheduled departure date of March 2019, he said.
	"I think there's a broad consensus that this process has to be completed by the scheduled time of the next general election which is in June 2022," he said.

Russia's FSB security agency said today it had detained seven nationals from Central Asia who were "preparing terrorist attacks" in Saint Petersburg, which suffered a metro bombing in April.
	Those held were suspected of planning to hit "the railway system and major public gathering places" in Russia's second city, the FSB said in a statement.
	Russia has stepped up security since a suicide bomb attack in the Saint Petersburg subway killed 15 and injured dozens on April 3.
	The alleged perpetrator, Akbarjon Djalilov, was a 22- year-old Russian citizen who was born in ex-Soviet Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia.

	The regional court in the western city of Cologne said it would suspend the sentence of one year and eight months against the defendant, Daniel Kaye, following pleas to this effect by both prosecutors and the defence.
	The 29-year-old last week described as "the worst mistake of my life" the attack that knocked more than one million German households offline in November, carried out for money on behalf of a Liberian client.

South Africa paceman Vernon Philander has been taken to hospital after spending most of the second day's play in the third Test against England at The Oval today off the field.
     Philander took two wickets for 17 runs in 12 overs in between bouts of what was said to be stomach illness on Thursday's rain-marred first day.
     But he only bowled five more overs in Friday's first session before leaving the field and has yet to return to play.
     A team spokeswoman said Philander had been taken to hospital for tests to determine the precise nature of his condition, which now appears to be more serious than initially thought.
     The 32-year-old Philander is one of the leading seam bowlers in world cricket, having taken 171 wickets in 46 Test at an average of 22.14.
